Burgomaster
Burgomaster (alternatively spelled Burgomeister, literally master of the town, borough or master of the fortress[Bürgermeister] is german for Mayor) is the English form of various terms in or derived from Germanic languages for the chief magistrate or chairman of the executive council of a sub-national level of administration. All contemporary titles are commonly translated into English as Town Mayor.

Bürgermeister
Ein Bürgermeister ist das Oberhaupt einer Gemeinde, Verbandsgemeinde oder Stadt. Er wird je nach Land direkt von den Bürgern oder vom Stadt-/Gemeinderat gewählt.

Maire
Le maire représente l'autorité municipale. Dans de nombreux cas, il est le détenteur du pouvoir exécutif au niveau d'une ville ou d'un village en France et au Québec. Ce titre correspond au titre de bourgmestre en Belgique et au Luxembourg. Dans un gouvernement à gérance municipale comme dans certaines villes du Canada et des États-Unis, le maire n'a qu'un rôle protocolaire, le conseil étant le détenteur du pouvoir exécutif. L'élection ou sa désignation (voir Élections municipales), son rôle et ses attributs sont variables selon les villes ou pays concernés.

Burmistrz
Burmistrz (ze średniowiecznego niem. Bur(g)mīster - mistrz grodu) to, zazwyczaj obieralny, przewodniczący zarządu/magistratu gminy miejskiej.
W Polsce urząd ten pojawił się w XIII wieku, wraz z rozwojem samorządu miejskiego. Burmistrz był przewodniczącym rady miejskiej, wybieranym zwykle co kwartał spośród rajców. W XIX wieku nastąpiło oddzielenie funkcji burmistrza od funkcji przewodniczącego rady miejskiej.
Obecnie burmistrz to jednoosobowy organ wykonawczy (wójt) gminy miejskiej oraz gminy miejsko-wiejskiej. W miastach powyżej 100 000 mieszkańców lub posiadających historycznie przyjęte nazewnictwo organem wykonawczym jest prezydent miasta. Burmistrz jest również kierownikiem urzędu miasta (lub miasta i gminy). Z mocy ustawy jest też kierownikiem urzędu stanu cywilnego, lecz może w swoje miejsce mianować odrębnego kierownika tego urzędu, co też z reguły jest praktykowane.
