Buckwheat is a variety of plants in the dicot family Polygonaceae: the Eurasian genus Fagopyrum, the North American genus Eriogonum, and the Northern Hemisphere genus Fallopia. Either of the latter two may be referred to as "wild buckwheat." Despite the name, buckwheats are not related to wheat, as they are not cereals / grasses (family Poaceae); instead, buckwheat is related to sorrels, knotweeds, and rhubarb.

Der Echte Buchweizen (Fagopyrum esculentum), auch Gemeiner Buchweizen, ist eine Pflanzenart aus der Gattung Buchweizen (Fagopyrum) in der Familie der Knöterichgewächse (Polygonaceae). Manchmal wird er auch in die Gattung Polygonum eingeordnet. Buchweizen ist ein Pseudogetreide (Pseudocerealie).

Le sarrasin, appelé aussi blé noir, est une plante à fleurs annuelle de la famille des Polygonacées, cultivée pour ses graines consommées en alimentation humaine et animale. Bien qu' utilisé comme céréale, le sarrasin n'est pas une graminée et malgré son appellation courante de « blé noir », ce n'est ni une variété de blé ni une céréale. Il est dépourvu de gluten, ce qui le rend non panifiable dans le sens propre du terme, mais panifiable pourtant, car il contient vraisemblablement d'autres substances "collantes". Il est utilisable dans la confection de produits destinés aux personnes intolérantes au gluten.

Bovete (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench), en växt nära släkt med rabarber och vars frukter används för att göra mjöl eller gryn. Namnet till trots är bovete inget sädesslag. Namnet kommer från holländskans bockweit som betyder bok-vete, eftersom kornet liknar bokollon.

Gryka zwyczajna (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) - gatunek rośliny jednorocznej z rodziny rdestowatych. Występuje w klimacie umiarkowanym. Pochodzi ze wschodniej i środkowej Azji. W Polsce jest gatunkiem uprawianym, czasami przejściowo dziczejącym (efemerofit, archeofit) .
