Een bel is een dun vlies van
vloeistof gevuld met gas in een gas-omgeving, of een in een vloeistof gevormde bolvormige holte (caviteit) al dan niet gevuld met gas. Vloeistof staat centraal in de wording van de bel. Een bel is teer, disintegreert snel, is vluchtig, is niet grijpbaar. Voor een in gestolde vloeistof (bijvoorbeeld glas) aanwezige bel lijkt dat niet te gelden – die is stabiel. Dat komt echter doordat de vloeistof gestold is; de bel is er in gevangen en is daarom stabiel geworden.
