For the video game, see Brigandine (video game). A brigandine, a form of body armour, is a cloth garment, generally canvas or leather, lined with small oblong steel plates riveted to the fabric. The form of the brigandine is essentially the same as the civilian doublet, though it is commonly sleeveless. However, depictions of brigandine armor with sleeves are known. Many brigandines appear to have had larger, somewhat 'L-shaped' plates over the lungs. The rivets, or nails, attaching the plates to the fabric are often decorated, being gilt or of latten and often embossed with a design. Brigandines were essentially a refinement of the earlier coat of plates, which developed in the late 12th century and typically were of simpler construction and used larger plates. Brigandines first appeared towards the end of the 14th century, but survived beyond this transitional period between mail and plate, and came into wide use in the 15th century, remaining in use well into the 16th. 15th century brigandines are generally front-opening garments with the nails arranged in triangular groups of three, while 16th century brigandines generally have smaller plates with the rivets arranged in rows.

La brigandine est une armure constituée de plaques rivetées sur du cuir ou du tissu épais, fournissant une excellente protection pour une armure peu onéreuse et simple à fabriquer (moins chère que le plastron sur mesures fait par le forgeron, plus rapide à produire que la maille) et pour ces raisons rapidement adoptée par les nombreux mercenaires du XIVe siecle qui portaient alors les noms de "routiers" ou "brigands" d'où le nom de l'armure.

Unter einer Brigantine verstand man eine Art Schuppenpanzer, die seit dem 14. Jahrhundert gebräuchlich war und sich aus dem Lentner, einer späten Form des Plattenrocks gebildet hat. Die Brigantine bestand aus zahlreichen Metallplättchen, oft zum Schutz verzinnt, die unter eine Lage Stoff, festem Leinen oder auch Samt genietet wurde. Die Nietköpfe die an der Außenseite des Oberstoffes sichtbar wurden, bilden das typische Aussehen der Brigantine. Oft waren diese Nietköpfe in Dreiergruppen angeordnet und verziert. Da die Plättchen in verschiedenen Größen gehalten waren und in unterschiedlicher Ausrichtung vernietet wurden, garantierte die Brigantine eine gute Kombination aus Beweglichkeit und Schutz - nicht so starr wie ein Plattenpanzer, aber auch nicht so durchlässig wie ein Kettenhemd.

Brygantyna, czasami też brygandyna – rodzaj pancerza, skórzana kurtka z naszytymi lub przynitowanymi od wewnątrz płytkami metalowymi. Płytki miały ok. 2,5 na 5 cm, czasami dodawano dodatkowo dużą okrągłą płytę na piersiach. Płytki niekiedy pokrywano cyną dla zapobiegania korozji. Brygantyny były używane w Europie i Azji od XII do XV wieku, początkowo przez piechotę, potem tylko przez strzelców (łuczników i kuszników) zarówno pieszych jak i konnych.
