These rhythms may be characterised by their intensive use of syncopation and polyrhythms.

Le breakbeat est initialement un modèle rythmique binaire issu de la musique funk. On trouve les premiers exemples de breakbeats dans les accompagnements musicaux d'artistes funk et soul comme James Brown, Herbie Hancock ou Lyn Collins.

Ein Breakbeat ist ein Rhythmus, der in der elektronischen Musik verwendet wird.Dabei werden Ausschnitte echter Schlagzeugrhythmen (Samples), die meist aus Breaks von Funkliedern stammen, als Loop abgespielt. Oft werden dabei auch mehrere Aufnahmen in Bruchteile von Takten oder in lange Ausschnitte zerhackt, und in veränderter Abfolge übereinander gelegt. Besonders in Jungle-Produktionen wird die Abspielgeschwindigkeit drastisch erhöht und die Samples mit zahlreichen Effekten versehen.

Breakbeat - podgatunek muzyki elektronicznej, której charakterystycznym elementem są podziały rytmiczne inne niż 4/4 (w przeciwieństwie do występujących w house'ie i trance'ie).Rytmy te również często wykorzystują synkopy i polirytmię, co wskazuje na ich związek z muzyką afrykańską lub afro-amerykańską. W Polsce popularność Breakbeat'u jest nadal mała, zależna od regionu (największą popularność breakbeat zyskał w Krakowie i Łodzi), choć polska scena muzyki elektronicznej dynamicznie się rozwija. Internetowymi działaczami na polskiej scenie breakbeat'owej jest forum NuSkoolBreaks.pl [1]oraz portal Breakz.pl [2], które w bardzo szybkim tempie jednoczą miłośników połamanych rytmów. Zdaje się, że największy wpływ na rozwój tego gatunku miały zarówno amerykańskie odmiany imprezowego hip-hopu z Florydy(Miami Bass), jak i brytyjska scena Oldskool Rave(UK Breakbeat). Doprowadziło to do powstania wielu podgatunków, z których najpopularniejsze są: Nuskool Breaks, Ragga Breaks, Electro Breaks, Hardcore Breaks oraz Progressive Breaks

Breakbeat (anche breakbeats o breaks) è un termine usato per descrivere una serie di sottogeneri della musica elettronica, di solito caratterizzati dall' uso di una "cassa" (in inglese drum pattern) che non sia del ritmo di 4/4 in opposizione al beat costante dell' house o della trance. Ritmi del genere possono essere caratterizzati dal loro uso della sincope e del poliritmo, che sono prominenti in tutta la musica d' origine africana tra cui spicca la musica afro-americana.
