The braille system, devised in 1821 by Frenchman Louis Braille, is a method that is widely used by blind people to read and write. Each braille character or cell is made up of six dot positions, arranged in a rectangle containing two columns of three dots each. A dot may be raised at any of the six positions to form sixty-four (26) combinations, including the combination in which no dots are raised. For reference purposes, a particular combination may be described by naming the positions where dots are raised, the positions being universally numbered 1 to 3, from top to bottom, on the left, and 4 to 6, from top to bottom, on the right. For example, dots 1-3-4 would describe a cell with three dots raised, at the top and bottom in the left column and on top of the right column, i.e., the letter m. In braille, pages are separated by a line so that you can feel going across the page.

Le braille est un système d'écriture tactile à l'usage des personnes aveugles ou gravement déficientes visuelles. Le système Braille porte le nom de son inventeur, le français Louis Braille (1809-1852). Il avait lui même perdu la vue suite à un accident. Élève à l'Institut des jeunes aveugles, il modifie et perfectionne le code Barbier. En 1829 paraît le premier exposé de sa méthode.

Die Brailleschrift [] wird von stark Sehbehinderten und Blinden benutzt; sie ist also eine Blindenschrift. Sie wurde 1825 vom Franzosen Louis Braille entwickelt. Die Schrift arbeitet mit Punktmustern, die von hinten in das Papier gepresst sind, so dass sie als Erhöhung mit den Fingerspitzen abgegriffen werden können.

Alfabet Braille'a – alfabet umożliwiający zapisywanie i odczytywanie tekstów osobom niewidomym. Stworzony przez Louisa Braille'a, który w wyniku wypadku oślepł w dzieciństwie. Oparty jest na wojskowym systemie umożliwiającym odczytywanie rozkazów bez użycia światła. Jest jednym z pierwszych przykładów technologii asystujących.Podstawą, z której wyprowadza się cały system Braille'a jest sześciopunkt nazywany znakiem tworzącym. System składa się ze znaków będących kombinacją sześciu wypukłych punktów ułożonych w dwóch kolumnach po trzy punkty w każdej. Lewa kolumna zawiera umownie oznaczone punkty: 1,2,3, zaś prawą stanowią punkty: 4,5,6. Wzajemna kombinacja i rozmieszczenie punktów daje możliwość zapisu sześćdziesięciu trzech znaków. W brajlu można zapisać wszystko - istnieje kilka uzupełniających systemów zapisu brajlowskiego - notacje matematyczna, chemiczna, fizyczna i muzyczna.

Il braille è un sistema di scrittura e lettura a rilievo per non vedenti messo a punto dal francese Louis Braille nella prima metà del XIX secolo.Consiste in simboli formati da un massimo di sei punti, impressi con un punteruolo su fogli di carta spessa o, più raramente, di plastica. Il punteruolo viene orientato da chi scrive entro caselle della grandezza di circa 3 x 7 millimetri (vedi link a fine pagina), inserite in un regolo in plastica o in metallo di lunghezza variabile che viene fatto scorrere su un telaio incardinato su una tavoletta scanalata dello stesso materiale, su cui si blocca il foglio.
