scientific study of plant
life. As a branch of
biology, it is also called plant science(s), phytology, or plant biology. Botany covers a wide range of scientific disciplines that study
plants,
algae, and
fungi including:
structure,
growth,
reproduction,
metabolism,
development,
diseases, and chemical properties and evolutionary relationships between the different groups. The study of plants and botany began with tribal lore, used to identify edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, making botany one of the oldest sciences. From this ancient interest in plants, the scope of botany has increased to include the study of over 550,000 kinds or species of living organisms.

Botanique
La botanique est la
science consacrée à l'étude des
végétaux (du
grec βοτάνηιϰή, féminin du mot βοτάνηιϰόξ qui signifie « qui concerne les herbes, les plantes »; βοτάνη qui signifie « herbe, plante » veut dire également « fourrage » ou « plante fourragère »). Elle présente plusieurs facettes qui la rattachent aux autres
sciences du vivant. La botanique générale recouvre la
taxinomie (description des caractères diagnostiques et différentiels), la
systématique (dénombrement et classification des
taxons dans un certain ordre), la
morphologie végétale (décrivant les organes ou parties de la plante), l'
histologie végétale, la
physiologie végétale, la
biogéographie végétale et la
pathologie végétale. Certaines disciplines, comme la
dendrologie, sont spécialisées sur un sous-ensemble des végétaux.
