borough

A borough is an administrative division used in various countries. In principle, the term borough designates a self-governing township although, in practice, official use of the term varies widely. In the Middle Ages, boroughs were settlements that were granted some self-government. Boroughs were particularly common in England, Germany, and Scotland. In medieval England, boroughs were also entitled to elect members of parliament. The Borough in Southwark, London is thought to have been the original 'borough' from which all others derive.

Der Begriff Borough (deutsch Gemeinde, Bezirk) bezeichnet eine Verwaltungseinheit in verschiedenen Staaten.Die Konzept der Einteilung des Staatsgebiets in Boroughs stammt ursprünglich aus England. Der Begriff Borough kommt von dem Wort burh, das in der altenglischen Sprache 'befestigter Ort' bedeutet (vgl. Burg). Das Wort ist etymologisch auch mit dem deutschen Wort Bereich verwandt.Der durch das Borough verliehene Status spiegelt sich vor allem in Südengland häufig in der Endung bury in Ortsnamen wider; in den Midlands in der Endung borough. In Schottland wurde stattdessen die Bezeichnung burgh verwendet.

Un borough, pronunciato , è il nome di una forma di amministrazione locale utilizzata nella provincia canadese del Quebec, in alcuni stati degli USA, in Inghilterra, nell'Irlanda del Nord e in Australia (in passato anche in Nuova Zelanda).Il suffisso -borough (o -brough) appare in alcuni toponimi di comuni e città in Inghilterra, nella parte meridionale del paese lo si trova nella forma -bury, in questa forma è usato anche nell'area statunitense del New England mentre la forma -burg (o -burgh) è più comune in Scozia e nella parte meridionale e occidentali degli Stati Uniti.

Een borough is een politieke verdeling die van oorsprong in Engeland wordt gebruikt. Het Schotse equivalent is burgh. Het zuiden van Engeland gebruikt bury als uitgang voor sommige plaatsnamen, maar -borough werd meer in de Midlands gebruikt. -Bury wordt in New England gebruikt, en -burg meer in het Amerikaanse zuiden en westen. Een spellingsvariant is Brough, gewoonlijk uitgesproken als bruh.
