Originellement, le terme bootleg servait à désigner, durant la prohibition des années 1920 aux États-Unis, un individu qui cachait de l'alcool dans la partie montante de sa botte (bootleg signifie littéralement "jambe de botte") (voir Bootlegger).

Bootleg
Der Begriff Bootleg bezeichnet im Deutschen nicht autorisierte Tonaufzeichnungen, die zumeist bei Konzerten entstanden sind. Häufig spricht man auch synonym von Schwarzpressung oder Raubpressung. Der Begriff leitet sich vom englischen "bootleg" (Stiefelschaft) her. Im Stiefelschaft wurden Schnapsflaschen über die Grenze geschmuggelt, woraus die Zweitbedeutung to bootleg = schmuggeln entstand.

Bootleg - angielski termin oznaczający nagranie muzyczne rozpowszechniane bez zgody autora; nagranie pirackie. Wielu fanów do określenia nielegalnych nagrań z koncertów używa terminu ROIO - Records of Illegitimate/Indeterminate Origin czyli "nagrania o nielegalnym/nieokreślonym pochodzeniu".

Bootleg
Col termine bootleg si intende generalmente un prodotto editoriale - un libro, un disco, etc. - prodotto in violazione delle leggi sul copyright.Il termine può riferirsi anche a prodotti di stampa in cui si fa un uso non autorizzato di loghi, disegni, personaggi di fumetti o a copie di anteprime di film catturate con videocamere nascoste durante le proiezioni.In inglese, la parola bootleg indica la gamba di uno stivale e, dall'abitudine di nascondervi piccoli oggetti per sottrarli da potenziali ispezioni, la parola è diventata un verbo ed un aggettivo usati per indicare rispettivamente l'azione del contrabbandare e l'oggetto contrabbandato (o, più raramente, rubato).
