A boomerang is a simple wooden implement used for various purposes. It is primarily associated with Australian Aborigines, but other forms are found amongst peoples of North East Africa, Arizona and southern California Native Americans and in India. The oldest boomerang found so far was discovered in a cave in the Carpathian Mountains in Poland and is believed to be about 20,000 years old. Boomerangs come in many shapes and sizes depending on their geographic/tribal origins and intended function. The most recognizable type is the returning boomerang, a kind of throwing stick that, when thrown correctly, travels in a curved path and returns to its point of origin. Other types of boomerang are of the non-returning sort, and indeed, some are not thrown at all but are used in hand-to-hand combat by Aboriginal people. Boomerangs can be variously used as hunting weapons, percussive musical instruments, battle clubs, fire-starters, decoys for hunting waterfowl, and as recreational playthings. The smallest boomerang may be less than 10 cm from tip-to-tip, and the largest over 2 meters in length. Tribal boomerangs may be incised and/or painted with designs meaningful to its maker. Most boomerangs seen today are of the tourist or competition sort, and are almost invariably of the returning type.

The BOOMERanG experiment (Balloon Observations Of Millimetric Extragalactic Radiation and Geophysics) measured the cosmic microwave background radiation of a part of the sky during three sub-orbital (high altitude) balloon flights. It was the first experiment to make large, high fidelity images of the CMB temperature anisotropies. By using a telescope which flew at over 42,000 metres high, it was possible to reduce the atmospheric absorption of microwaves to a minimum. This allowed massive cost reduction compared to a satellite probe, though only a small part of the sky could be scanned.

Boomerang! is a 1947 film based on a true story about the early career of Attorney General Homer Cummings. The film was directed by Elia Kazan, based on a story (written by Fulton Oursler) in Reader's Digest and was shot largely in Stamford, Connecticut. This semidocumentary also contains voice-overs by Reed Hadley.

BOOMERanG (acronyme de Balloon Observations of Millimetric Extragalatic Radiation and Geophysics) est un ballon stratosphérique d'observation américain transportant un télescope de 1,2 mètre de diamètre qui observa en 1998, dans la haute atmosphère, le fond diffus cosmologique. Après un vol de test réalisé sur le territoire américain, ses vols scientifiques ont été effectués depuis la base antarctique McMurdo, située en bordure de la Mer de Ross et à proximité du mont Erebus. Cette localisation a été motivée d'un part par la circulation très régulière des vents dans l'Antarctique, qui permettent à un ballon lancé depuis ce lieu d'être récupéré environ 10 jours plus tard après avoir effectué un tour du continent, et par le fait que lors de l'été austral, l'ensoleillement constant permettait à l'instrument d'être alimenté en énergie pendant toute la durée du vol (environ 10 jours pour le vol de 1998, 14 pour celui de 2003). De plus, une région particulièrement pauvre en sources d'avant plan émettrice dans le domaine de longueur d'onde étudié est situé presque à l'opposé de la direction où se trouve le Soleil pendant cette période, permettant aux instruments de l'observer sans être gênés par l'émission solaire.

Un boomerang est une aile volante qui, lorsqu'elle est lancée de façon à tourner sur elle-même, suit une trajectoire courbe la faisant revenir vers son point de départ. Ses pales présentent un profil porteur semblable à celui d'une aile d'avion. La portance développée par les pales en rotation détermine cette trajectoire caractéristique.

Der Ausdruck Bumerang bezeichnet ein Sportgerät aus Sperrholz, Kunststoff, oder anderen festen Materialien, das zum Werfer zurückkehrt, wenn es korrekt geworfen wird. Der traditionelle Jagdbumerang kehrt nicht zum Werfer zurück: sein Vorteil besteht gerade darin, dass er weiter, geradliniger und damit auch zielsicherer fliegt als ein gerader Stock.

Bumerang -  broń ręcznie miotana stosowana zarówno do polowań jak i do walki. Powszechnie uważa się, że bumerangi mogą wracać do rzucającego, w rzeczywistości dotyczy to tylko niektórych odmian tego narzędzia. Tradycyjne bumerangi robione były zazwyczaj z drewna i miały kształt zbliżony nieco do banana. Obecnie bumerangi wytwarzane są z różnorodnych materiałów, używane są do zabawy, sportu, rekreacji i mają bardzo różne kształty (np. trzy- czy czteroramienne krzyże). Użycie bumerangów jest powszechnie kojarzone z australijskimi Aborygenami, ale tego typu broń była znana i używana także w innych kulturach, między innymi w Europie i Egipcie. Aborygeni jako jedyni używali bumerangów powracających do rzucającego.
