A bog is a wetland that accumulates peat, a deposit of dead plant material—often mosses, and in a majority of cases, Sphagnum moss. It is one of the four main types of wetlands. Other names for bogs include mire, quagmire and muskeg. Frequently, as the illustration on the right shows, they are covered in Ericaceous shrubs rooted in the Sphagnum moss and peat.

Moore sind nasse Lebensräume. Der ständige Wasserüberschuss aus Niederschlägen oder Mineralbodenwasser bedeutet einen Sauerstoffmangel und führt zu einem unvollständigen Abbau der pflanzlichen Reste, die als Torf abgelagert werden. Durch die Anhäufung von Torf wächst die Oberfläche von lebenden Mooren in die Höhe. Im Gegensatz zu Sümpfen herrscht in Mooren eine permanente Wassersättigung. Gelegentliches Austrocknen führt in Sümpfen zu einem vollständigen Abbau der organischen Substanz zu Humus. In Mooren ist durch die permanente Wassersättigung dieser Abbau gehemmt, sodass Torf entstehen kann. Moore werden in der Bodenkunde als Moorböden bzw. organische Böden erfasst. Eine grobe Untergliederung teilt die Moore nach ihrer Topographie in Hochmoore und Niedermoore ein.

Une tourbière est une zone humide caractérisée par l'accumulation progressive de la tourbe, un sol caractérisé par sa très forte teneur en matière organique, peu ou pas décomposée, d'origine végétale. C'est un écosystème particulier et fragile dont les caractéristiques en font un puits de carbone, car il y a plus de synthèse de matière organique que de dégradation.

Torfowisko (ang. peatland, mire, peat bog, niem. Moor, Moos, Ried, Filz) – jeden z typów mokradeł, siedlisk na tyle uwodnionych, że występuje tam specyficzna roślinność i zachodzą procesy akumulacji osadów organicznych. Jest to teren stale podmokły, o podłożu trudno przepuszczalnym, pokryty zbiorowiskami roślin bagiennych i bagienno-łąkowych. Torfowiska występują głównie w strefie klimatu umiarkowanego wilgotnego i chłodnego (północna część Eurazji i Ameryki Północnej, a także obszary górskie). Obszary te są cenne pod względem przyrodniczym, można je także wykorzystać gospodarczo – poprzez wydobywanie torfu. Torfowisko przyrasta średnio o 1 mm w ciągu roku.
