A bodyguard (or "close protection officer") is a type of security guard or government agent who protects a person—usually a famous, wealthy, or politically important figure—from assault, kidnapping, assassination, loss of confidential information, or other threats. Most important public figures such as heads of state or governors are protected by several bodyguards or by a team of bodyguards from an agency, security forces, or police forces (e.g., in the US, the    United States Secret Service or the Bureau of Diplomatic Security). Less-important public figures, or those with lower risk profiles, are often accompanied by a single bodyguard who may double as a driver. Some celebrities also use bodyguards to protect themselves from aggressive fans or violent stalkers.

La guardia del corpo è una professione che consiste nel difendere una persona, sia nell'ambito della privacy che dell'integrità fisica. Generalmente è praticata da giovani di un'elevata robustezza corporea, ma possono capitare casi in cui la svolgano anche persone di mezza età. Nel proprio lavoro la guardia del corpo si serve spesso di oggetti di difesa quali spray lacrimogeni o schiume per rendere temporaneamente innocuo l'assalitore. Sono capitati casi in cui la guarda del corpo, nel tentativo di allontare la persona che infastidiva il proprio cliente, sia ricorsa a metodi molto aggressivi, fino a far degenerare la situazione in una rissa. Sono noti i casi in cui giornalisti o persone sono state ricoverate in ospedale per lesioni gravi ad opera delle guardie del corpo.
