biotechnology (biotech)

The use of living things or parts of living things to create or modify drugs and other substances; to modify food crops and other organisms that are perceptible to the naked eye; or to adapt microorganisms to agricultural, medical, or other purposes. Biotech ranges from brewing, cheese making, and the yeasting of dough to make leavened bread, to bioconversion, gene therapy, and the cloning of sheep.
