Biomass, in ecology, is the mass of living biological organisms in a given area or ecosystem at a given time. Biomass can refer to species biomass, which is the mass of one or more species, or to community biomass, which is the mass of all species in the community. It can include microorganisms, plants or animals. The mass can be expressed as the average mass per unit area, or as the total mass in the community.

Als Biomasse wird die gesamte organische Substanz bezeichnet. Basis für die Bildung von Biomasse ist die vor allem von Pflanzen betriebene Photosynthese, bei der Sonnenenergie absorbiert und durch Bildung von Biomasse gespeichert wird. Zur Biomasse werden sowohl lebende Pflanzen, als auch die von ihnen abgeleitete organische Substanz, wie Tiere und Mikroorganismen, als auch tote organische Substanz wie Totholz, Laub, Stroh und anderes gezählt. Die aus Biomasse entstandenen fossilen Energieträger (Kohle, Erdöl und Erdgas) werden ihr nicht zugeordnet. Die Natur produziert jährlich große Mengen an Biomasse, von der ein kleiner Teil als Nahrung, Futtermittel oder nachwachsender Rohstoff (Nawaro) zur stofflichen Nutzung oder zur Energiebereitstellung (Bioenergie) genutzt wird.

Inny podział wyróżnia w ekosystemach biomasą producentów i biomasę konsumentów, które składają się na całkowitą biomasę biocenozy. Biomasa producentów tworzona jest w procesie fotosyntezy. Konsumenci i reducenci (destruenci) tworzą swoją biomasę kosztem biomasy producentów.
