biennial plant

A biennial plant is a flowering plant that takes two years to complete its lifecycle. In the first year the plant grows leaves, stems, and roots (vegetative structures), then it enters a period of dormancy over the colder months. Usually the stem remains very short and the leaves are low to the ground, forming a rosette. Many biennials require a cold treatment, or vernalization, before they will flower. The next spring or summer the stem of the biennial plant elongates greatly, or "bolts". The plant then flowers, producing fruits and seeds before it finally dies. There are far fewer biennials than either perennials or annuals.

Zweijährige Pflanzen (auch bienne genannt) sind krautige Pflanzen, deren Lebenszyklus (von der Keimung bis zur Samenbildung) zwei Jahre beträgt. Gemeint sind dabei nicht zweimal 365 Tage sondern zwei Vegetationsperioden, also eine Zeit/Vegetationszeit vor und nach einer klimatisch ungünstigen Zeit (Frost/Winter oder Trockenzeit). Sie unterscheiden sich dadurch von den Mehrjährigen, die mehrere Vegetationsperioden lang leben und den Einjährigen, die nur eine Vegetationsperiode lang leben.

Roślina dwuletnia, roślina dwuroczna (ang. biennial, łac. biennis) - roślina potrzebująca do odbycia cyklu rozwojowego dwóch okresów wegetacyjnych. Podczas pierwszego roku wytwarzana jest rozeta liści asymilujących oraz organy spichrzowe (zmodyfikowane korzenie i pędy). W drugim roku wydawane są pędy kwiatowe i nasiona, po czym roślina zamiera.

Двухле́тнее расте́ние - травянистое растение, полный жизненный цикл которого составляет от 12 до 24 месяцев. В первый год у растения вырастают листья, стебли и корни, после чего оно впадает в состояние покоя на зимние месяцы. Обычно в это время стебель остается очень коротким, а листья опускаются к земле, образуя розетку. Для многих двухлетних растений требуется воздействие низких температур (холодовая реактивация диапаузы) для того, чтобы они смогли зацвести. В следующий сезон стебель двулетнего растения сильно удлиняется или появляются цветки, фрукты или семена, после чего растение погибает. По сравнению с однолетними и многолетними растениями видов двухлетних растений гораздо меньше.
