Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a peptide hormone produced in pregnancy, that is made by the embryo soon after conception and later by the syncytiotrophoblast (part of the placenta). Its role is to prevent the disintegration of the corpus luteum of the ovary and thereby maintain progesterone production that is critical for a pregnancy in humans. hCG may have additional functions, for instance it is thought that it affects the immune tolerance of the pregnancy. Early pregnancy testing generally is based on the detection or measurement of hCG. Because hCG is produced also by some kinds of tumor, hCG is an important tumor marker, but it is not known whether this production is a contributing cause or an effect of tumorigenesis.

L'hormone chorionique gonadotrope ou CG (de l'anglais Chorionic Gonadotropin) est une hormone glycoprotéique produite au cours de la grossesse, fabriquée par l'embryon peu de temps après la conception et plus tard par le trophoblaste (partie du placenta). Il n'existe des gonadotropines chorioniques que chez les primates (chez l'espèce humaine, il s'agit de la hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin)) et chez les équidés (chez la jument, il s'agit de la eCG (equine CG) autrefois dénommée PMSG (Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin).

Zadaniem gonadotropiny kosmówkowej jest utrzymywanie funkcji ciałka żółtego, struktury, która powstaje w jajniku, w miejscu uwolnienia komórki jajowej, a potem podtrzymywanie produkcji progesteronu.

Humaan choriongonadotrofine (HCG) is een hormoon dat wordt geproduceerd tijdens een zwangerschap door het embryo. Vanaf de innesteling gaat het chorion (één van de drie vruchtvliezen van embryonale herkomst) HCG produceren. In de urine van de vrouw is dit soms al 2 weken na de bevruchting aantoonbaar (1 dag overtijd). Zwangerschapstesten zijn hierop gebaseerd.De organisatie Moeders voor Moeders zamelt urine van zwangere vrouwen in om de HCG te gebruiken voor de productie van Pregnyl, een medicijn dat onder andere wordt gebruikt bij vruchtbaarheidsbehandelingen, zoals IVF en IUI.
