Benzaldehyde (C6H5CHO) is a chemical compound consisting of a benzene ring with an aldehyde substituent. It is the simplest representative of the aromatic aldehydes and one of the most industrially used members of this family of compounds. At room temperature it is a colorless liquid with a characteristic and pleasant almond-like odor: benzaldehyde is an important component of the scent of almonds, hence its typical odor. It is the primary component of bitter almond oil extract, and can be extracted from a number of other natural sources in which it occurs, such as apricot, cherry, and laurel leaves, peach seeds and, in a glycoside combined form (amygdalin), in certain nuts and kernels. Currently benzaldehyde is primarily made from toluene by a number of different processes.

Deux chimistes, Friedrich Wöhler et Justus Liebig analysent, en 1832, l'essence d'amande amère dans laquelle ils trouvent du benzaldéhyde C7H6O. En isolant le composé et en le faisant réagir, ils se rendent compte qu'un groupement, qu'ils nomment radical benzoyle C7H5O, reste inchangé.

Benzaldehyd (auch falsches Bittermandelöl genannt), ist eine farblose Flüssigkeit, die bei 179 °C siedet. Es ist eine wichtige Grundchemikalie. Sie besitzt einen Flammpunkt von 64 °C und eine Zündtemperatur von 190 °C.Benzaldehyd ist gesundheitsschädlich, wobei eine echte Gesundheitsgefährdung für gewöhnlich nur bei vergleichsweise großen aufgenommenen Mengen zu erwarten ist. Es riecht angenehm süßlich nach echtem Bittermandelöl (das zu über 90% aus Benzaldehyd besteht) bzw. nach dem aus Mandeln und Zucker gefertigten Marzipan. Der Geschmack des Benzaldehyds wird allgemein als charakteristisch marzipanartig, jedoch im Reinzustand auch als unangenehm brennend empfunden. In großer Verdünnung, hierbei vor allem mit Ethanol, tritt in zunehmendem Maße eine Wildkirschnote zum Aroma hinzu.

Aldehyd benzoesowy, benzaldehyd, benzenokarboaldehyd to organiczny związek chemiczny, najprostszy aromatyczny aldehyd o wzorze C6H5CHO. Otrzymywany z toluenu (metylobenzenu) C6H5CH3 poprzez przekształcenie w dichlorometylobenzen (chlorek benzylidenu) C6H5CHCl2 i hydrolizę tego związku. Występuje w migdałach i ma zapach migdałowy, ale w odróżnieniu od nitrobenzenu i cyjanowodoru, które pachną podobnie, nie jest toksyczny. Stosowany w przemyśle perfumeryjnym, w przyprawach i w produkcji barwników, a także ważnych produktów pośrednich - kwasu migdałowego i cynamonowego. W środowisku zasadowym ulega reakcji Cannizzaro - dysproporcjonowania do kwasu benzoesowego i alkoholu benzylowego.
