Beatboxing is the art of vocal percussion. Although the term beatboxing derived from hip hop culture, it is not limited to hip hop music. It is primarily concerned with the art of producing drum beats, rhythm, and musical sounds using one's mouth, lips, tongue, voice, and more. It may also involve singing, vocal imitation of turntablism, the simulation of horns, strings, and other musical instruments. It is a form of vocal music, etymologically related to scat singing and puirt a beul.

Beatboxing nennt man das Erzeugen von Schlagzeug- und Perkussions-Geräuschen mit dem Mundraum. Klassische Gesangsstile und Vokaltechniken befassen sich vor allem mit den Vokalen. Beim Beatboxing liegt der Fokus dagegen auf den klanglichen Möglichkeiten der Konsonanten.Der musikalischen Bandbreite der imitierten Instrumente sind fast keine Grenzen gesetzt, und so werden zusätzlich zu den eigentlichen Beats auch Klangfarben (wie Snaretuning, Cymbals, Cowbells, Kongas und jegliche Idiophone), sowie Scratches, Cuts, Melodien, Basslinien und Vocals mit dem Mund imitiert. Durch das kontrollierte Bewegen von Zunge, Wangen-, Kiefer- und Halsmuskulatur und eine ausgefeilte Atemkontrolle werden auch mehrere Instrumente synchron simuliert, bzw. können komplexe Musikstücke durch einen einzigen Interpreten produziert werden.

Beatbox to sztuka rytmicznego tworzenia dźwięków – np. perkusji, linii basowej, skreczy – za pomocą narządów mowy – ust, języka, gardła czy przepony. Technika, przez niektórych określana jako hiphopowy odwrót od maszyn poprzez naśladowanie głosem rytmów i dźwięków paradoksalnie inspirowana jest estetyką maszynistyczną.

Il beatboxing consiste nella capacità e pratica di imitare tutti i suoni di una batteria (percussioni, piatti, eccetera) con l'uso della voce. Viene chiamato beat boxer colui il quale utilizza l'arte del beatboxing.Inizialmente sviluppatosi come forma di accompagnamento ritmico nella pratica della musica a cappella americana, il suo pioniere in questo campo può essere considerato Bobby McFerrin che ne fece intuire le possibilità espressive. Oggigiorno l'uso della percussione vocale, definita Vocal drums o mouthdrummming è patrimonio comune della "contemporary a cappella music".
