Several battalions are grouped to form a regiment or a brigade.The nomenclature varies by nationality and by branch of arms (e.g. some armies organize their infantry into battalions, but call battalion-sized cavalry, reconnaissance, or tank units a squadron or a regiment instead). There may even be subtle distinctions within a nation's branches of arms, such as a distinction between a tank battalion and an armored squadron, depending on how the unit's operational role is perceived to fit into the army's historical organization.

Bataillon ist die Bezeichnung für einen Verband in Streitkräften. In ihm sind mehrere Kompanien oder Batterien einer Truppengattung, aber zum Teil unterschiedlicher, sich ergänzender Ausrüstung zu einer organisch zusammengesetzten Truppe zusammengefasst. Je nach Truppengattung umfasst es 300 bis 1.200 Soldaten. Geführt wird ein Bataillon von einem Bataillonskommandeur, meist im Rang eines Oberstleutnants. Der nächstgrößere militärische Verband ist das Regiment. Das Wachbataillon der Bundeswehr mit über 1.800 Soldaten (entspricht etwa Regimentsstärke) hat seine Bezeichnung aus Gründen der Tradition.

Batalion (nazwa skrócona baon) - jednostka organizacyjna wojska, mniejsza od pułku - ok. 300 - 700 żołnierzy (czasem więcej niż 700).Termin wprowadzony został po raz pierwszy przez Niccolò Machiavellego jako określenie oddziału piechoty mniejszego od batalii. Od połowy XVI wieku nazwę tę wprowadzono we Francji dla oznaczenia jednostki taktycznej o zmiennej liczbie żołnierzy.Maurycy Orański jako wódz naczelny armii holenderskiej terminem batalion oznaczył jednostkę taktyczną piechoty podzieloną na 2 dywizjony muszkieterów i 1 dywizjon pikinierów, jednostka taka składała się z 550 ludzi. Później ten typ jednostki upowszechnił się w innych armiach. Od połowy XVII wieku batalion stał się także jednostką administracyjną wojska liczącą około 1000 żołnierzy.

Il battaglione è un'unità militare che raggruppa più compagnie.È costituito da un numero variabile di persone in funzione della composizione delle compagnie. È normalmente comandato da un ufficiale superiore (tenente colonnello o alle volte maggiore).Il battaglione copre specifiche funzioni nell'ambito delle grandi unità a cui viene aggregato. Nel caso di specialità d'arma particolari (genio, artiglieria, trasporti ecc.) viene aggregato ad unità di livello superiore come unità di supporto.
