The electric bass guitar (or "electric bass") is a bass stringed instrument played with the fingers by plucking, slapping, popping or using a pick. The bass is typically similar in appearance and construction to an electric guitar, but with a larger body, a longer neck and scale length, and 4 or 5 strings tuned one octave lower in pitch than the bass strings of a guitar. Since the 1950s, the electric bass has largely replaced the double bass in popular music. The bass is typically used to provide the low-pitched bassline(s) and bass runs in many different styles of music ranging from rock and metal to blues and jazz. The electric bass is also used as a soloing instrument in jazz, fusion, Latin, funk, and rock styles.

La guitare basse (simplement appelée basse) est un instrument de musique à cordes amplifié conçu selon le même principe que la guitare électrique. Depuis les années 1960, la guitare basse a remplacé la contrebasse dans la majorité des musiques populaires comme le rock et la pop. Depuis les années 1970, la guitare basse est régulièrement utilisée comme instrument soliste dans un type de jazz appelé le jazz-fusion.

Der elektrische Bass oder kurz E-Bass (auch Bass oder irreführenderweise Bassgitarre genannt) ist ein zumeist aus Holz gefertigtes Saiteninstrument. Wie bei der E-Gitarre werden die Saitenschwingungen nicht primär durch einen akustischen Klangkörper verstärkt, sondern durch Tonabnehmer in elektrische Signale umgewandelt, die mit Hilfe eines Bassverstärkers und von Lautsprechern hörbar gemacht werden.

Gitara basowa - instrument strunowy szarpany, najczęściej elektryczny, z progami na podstrunnicy (gryfie); stosuje się także gitary basowe bezprogowe (fretles, z ang. fretless). Gitara basowa — podobnie jak kontrabas — transponuje o oktawę w dół. Tradycyjne gitary basowe mają cztery struny E1, A1, D, G, czyli wydają dźwięki odpowiednio: 41,2 Hz, 55 Hz, 73,4 Hz i 98 Hz. Łączna skala gitary basowej obejmuje dźwięki (w brzmieniu) od E1 do g1, jest więc identyczna ze skalą kontrabasu. Spotyka się także modele 5-strunowe (z dodatkową dolną struną H1 lub C2), 6-strunowe (jak pięciostrunowy plus górna struna C), 8-strunowe (gdzie dla każdej struny, takiej jak w gitarze 4-strunowej jest dodana druga strojona o oktawę wyżej) oraz 12-strunowe. Firma Modulus Graphite wyprodukowała także 18-strunową gitarę basową (jej szyjka ma 6 cali szerokości). W muzyce rockowej na gitarze basowej gra basista. Gitara basowa należy do sekcji rytmicznej zespołu muzycznego w muzyce rozrywkowej, jednak obecnie jest często wykorzystywana jako instrument solowy.

Il basso elettrico è uno strumento musicale della famiglia dei cordofoni, simile alla chitarra elettrica, ma con una intonazione più bassa. Questo strumento è anche molto vicino al contrabbasso, con il quale condivide soprattutto l'intonazione delle corde.
