barzakh

Barzakh is the word for the term of life after death in which the soul of the deceased is transferred across the boundaries of the mortal realm into the spirit world and into a kind of "cold sleep" where the soul will rest until the Qiyamah (Judgement Day). It is a term referred to in Islamic eschatology and the Qur'an.

Barzakh (Arabisch:برزخ) is binnen de islam de term die gebruikt wordt voor de periode tussen iemands dood en zijn wederopstanding op de Dag des oordeels. Het wordt gezien als een soort slaaptoestand. Wie als moslim sterft, gehoorzaam aan God, zal in een gezegende toestand zijn, maar wie als een kafir sterft, ongehoorzaam aan God, zal gestraft worden. Om dat te bepalen zouden de engelen Nakir en Munkar de overledene bezoeken in het graf.
