The Bandeirantes were Brazilian colonial scouts who took part in the Bandeiras, exploration expeditions. Through these, the Bandeirantes expanded Portuguese America from the small limits of the Tordesilhas Line to roughly the same territory as current Brazil. This expansion discovered mineral wealth that made the fortune of Portugal during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Bandeirantes (von port. bandeira = Fahne) werden die Mitglieder von Expeditionstrupps genannt, die ab dem 17. Jahrhundert auf der Suche nach Gold, Diamanten und Sklaven das brasilianische Landesinnere erkundeten und erschlossen. Sie zogen entlang der Flüsse bis zum La Plata und Amazonas. Dabei wurde manche Siedlung angelegt, die heute noch besteht.

Bandeirantes - członkowie wypraw w głąb interioru w okresie portugalskiego podboju Brazylii.Począwszy od XVI wieku powstawały oddziały awanturników ruszających w głąb kontynentu. Trudnili się handlem indiańskimi niewolnikami, byli także poszukiwaczami złóż mineralnych (złoto, diamenty). Odziały mogły liczyć po kilkuset ludzi, ich główną bazą wypadową było powstałe w roku 1554 São Paulo. Eksplorowali terytoria dzisiejszych stanów Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Tocantins oraz Mato Grosso (obu). Szczyt działalności bandeirantes przypadł na XVII wiek. Najsławniejszymi dowódcami band byli Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva, Fernão Dias Pais, Antônio Raposo Tavares czy Domingos Jorge Velho.

I Bandeirantes furono esploratori coloniali portoghesi e brasiliani che presero parte alle "bandeiras", o spedizioni esplorative. Attraverso di esse i bandeirantes esplorarono e conquistarono le parti del Sudamerica comprese tra il Mato Grosso e il Rio delle Amazzoni, espandendo di fatto i possedimenti portoghesi oltre il confine stabilito dal trattato di Tordesillas. Le loro spedizioni fecero la fortuna del Portogallo durante il 1700-1800. Alcuni dei bandeirantes più famosi furono Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva, Fernão Dias Pais, Antonio Rodrigues Arzão, Antonio Pires de Campos, Bartolomeu Bueno de Sequeira e António Rapôso Tavares.
