Ballade
The ballade (; not to be confused with the ballad) is a form of French poetry. It was one of the three formes fixes (the other two were the Rondeau and the virelai) and one of the verse forms in France most commonly set to music between the late 13th and the 15th centuries.

Ballade
Initialement, la ballade est une forme fixe du lyrisme courtois de la fin du Moyen Âge ; le terme a connu un renouveau au , notamment grâce au mouvement du romantisme ; il est encore utilisé aujourd'hui sous sa forme initiale,comme dans l'oeuvre de Jean Chollet, et non pas seulement sous forme d'un récit épique.

Ballade
Een ballade is een gedicht waarvan de vorm in de Middeleeuwen is ontstaan. Het kent een aantal strofen, die elk worden afgesloten met een refrein of stok. De ballade lijkt hierin op het referein.

Bekende beoefenaars van het genre waren in de Middeleeuwen Guillaume de Machaut, Christine de Pisan en François Villon.

De Rederijkers, met hun voorkeuren voor vormtechnische huzarenstukjes, beoefenden het genre met enthousiasme. Vervolgens raakte het uit de gratie toen de kunst van de Renaissance veld won, om weer in de aandacht te komen in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw, met beoefenaren als Algernon Charles Swinburne.
