Nitrogen (IPA: ) is a chemical element which has the symbol N and atomic number 7. Elemental nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and mostly inert diatomic gas at standard conditions, constituting 78.1 y volume of Earth's atmosphere. Nitrogen is a constituent element of all living tissues and amino acids. Many industrially important compounds, such as ammonia, nitric acid, and cyanides, contain nitrogen.

Der Name Stickstoff (lat. Nitrogenium) bezeichnet das chemische Element aus dem Periodensystem der Elemente mit dem Symbol N und der  Ordnungszahl 7. Atomar kommt Stickstoff in der Natur kaum vor, da es sich sofort durch eine stark exotherme Reaktion zu molekularem Stickstoff N2 verbindet. Elementar tritt Stickstoff nur in Form eines kovalenten Homodimers, einer chemischen Verbindung aus zwei Stickstoff-Atomen, auf (→ molekularer Stickstoff, auch Distickstoff (vgl. Disauerstoff), Summenformel N2).

Azot (N, łac. nitrogenium) pierwiastek chemiczny z grupy niemetali. Zawartość w górnych warstwach Ziemi wynosi 0,0019%. Stabilnymi izotopami azotu są 14N i 15N.Pierwiastek został odkryty w 1772 r. przez Daniela Rutherforda.Azot w stanie wolnym występuje w postaci N2. W cząsteczce tej dwa atomy tego pierwiastka są połączone ze sobą wiązaniem potrójnym. Azot jest pierwiastkiem stosunkowo biernym chemicznie co spowodowane jest bardzo wysoką wartością energii wiązania w cząsteczce N2, wynosi ona aż 945.33 ± 0.59 kJ · mol-1.

L'azoto è costituente fondamentale delle molecole organiche più importanti dal punto di vista biochimico (DNA, proteine, vitamine), oltre che di composti inorganici estremamente diffusi e importanti come l'ammoniaca e l'acido nitrico. L'azoto molecolare (N2, composto di due atomi di azoto) è un gas incolore, inodore, insapore e inerte che costituisce il 78 ell'atmosfera terrestre (è il gas più diffuso nell'aria).
