axle

An axle is a central shaft for a rotating wheel or gear. In some cases the axle may be fixed in position with a bearing or bushing sitting inside the hole in the wheel or gear to allow the wheel or gear to rotate around the axle. In other cases the wheel or gear may be fixed to the axle, with bearings or bushings provided at the mounting points where the axle is supported. Sometimes, especially on bicycles, the latter type is referred to as a spindle.

Sie überträgt kein Drehmoment, nimmt aber Biegemomente, teilweise auch Axialkräfte auf.Umgangssprachlich werden die Begriffe Welle und Achse oft miteinander verwechselt. So haben sich Begriffe wie Halbachse bei Fahrzeugen eingebürgert, obwohl es sich eigentlich um eine Welle handelt.

Oś – element  mechanizmu lub maszyny, służący utrzymaniu w określonym położeniu osadzonych na tej osi wirujących elementów, najczęściej kół, oraz do przenoszenia na podpory sił działających na te elementy. Oś nie przenosi momentu obrotowego, przeciwnie niż wał.

In meccanica, l'albero è un organo di trasmissione di un moto rotatorio. Bisogna fare una divisione sostanziale: l'albero differisce dall'asse per il fatto che il primo trasmette momento torcente a determinati elementi, il secondo è dotato al massimo di una certa velocità angolare; l'asse può comunque essere sollecitato a flessione, taglio, trazione, compressione (carico di punta) ed a volte anche a fatica.
