Avant-garde (pronounced ) in French means "front guard", "advance guard", or "vanguard". The term is commonly used in French, English, and German to refer to people or works that are experimental or novel, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. Avant-garde represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm, or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm. The notion of the existence of the avant-garde is considered by some to be a hallmark of modernism, as distinct from postmodernism. Postmodernism posits that the age of the constant pushing of boundaries is no longer with us. Postmodernism posits that avant-garde has less applicability (or no applicability at all) in the age of Postmodern art.

Der Begriff Avantgarde stammt ursprünglich aus dem Sprachschatz des französischen Militärs und bezeichnet die Vorhut, also denjenigen Truppenteil, welcher als erster vorrückt und somit zuerst in Feindberührung tritt. Das Gegenstück ist die Nachhut (veraltet: „Arrièregarde“), welche als letzte abrückt und somit gleichfalls als letzte Feindberührung hat. Zwischen beiden marschiert die Hauptmacht, das „Gros“.

Awangarda (franc. avant garde - "straż przednia") - zespół tendencji i trendów w sztuce na początku XX wieku odrzucający dotychczasowe style, kreujący własny świat, nie naśladujący rzeczywistości, szukający odrębnego języka wyrazu. Twórcy awangardy odrzucali dorobek kulturowy i poszukiwali nowych, oryginalnych rozwiązań ideowo-artystycznych. Zjawisko pojawiło się ok. 1910 roku i wiązało się z powstaniem nowych kierunków w sztuce takich jak:futuryzm, ekspresjonizm, kubizm,dadaizm, surrealizm,fowizm.

L'avant-garde metal è un genere musicale metal caratterizzato da una grande sperimentazione tecnica, da un suono, da una strumentazione e dalle srutture che escono fuori dagli schemi del metal tradizionale, fondendo elementi tipici del Black Metal e del Black Metal Sinfonico con contaminazioni di ogni tipo, che possono spaziare dal Free Jazz al Death Metal; dalla Musica Classica a quella Musica Elettronica o Ambient. Alcune dei gruppi di avanguardia più noti sono Arcturus, Solefad, Ulver, Ved Buens Ende e Celtic Frost.
