Autonomy (Greek: Auto-Nomos - nomos meaning "law": one who gives oneself his/her own law) is the right to self-government. Autonomy is a concept found in moral, political, and bioethical philosophy. Within these contexts, it refers to the capacity of a rational individual to make an informed, uncoerced decision. In moral and political philosophy, autonomy is often used as the basis for determining moral responsibility for one's actions. One of the best known philosophical theories of autonomy was developed by Kant. In medicine, respect for the autonomy of patients is an important goal for doctors and other health-care professionals, though it can conflict with a competing ethical principle, beneficence.. Als eine Autonomie (von (alt)griechisch αυτονομία, (αὐτονομία) autonomía = sich selbst Gesetze gebend, Eigengesetzlichkeit, selbstständig) bezeichnet man je nach Fachbereich oder Zusammenhang Selbstständigkeit, Unabhängigkeit, Selbstverwaltung oder Entscheidungsfreiheit, beispielsweise das Recht nationaler Minderheiten, einen Teil ihrer Angelegenheiten selber zu bestimmen.

Pojęcie Autonomia pochodzi od (staro)greckiego αυτονομία, (αὐτονομία) autonomía = możliwość stanowienia norm samemu sobie, samodzielność prawna. Dziś używa się go w zależności od dyscypliny (gospodarka, prawo, polityka) lub kontekstu w znaczeniu niezawisłość, niezależność, samorządność (całkowita lub częściowa).

De term autonomie is afgeleid van het Grieks αυτονομία (autonomía, auto (zelf) + nomos (wet), autonomos (eigen wetten opleggend)) en beschrijft het vrij zijn van extern bestuur. Het concept wordt teruggevonden in politiek, technisch, filosofisch, geneeskundig en moreel verband. Het verwijst daarbij steeds naar de capaciteit van een rationeel individu of bestuur om eigen verantwoorde beslissingen te nemen. Een goed Nederlands synoniem is zelfbestuur. Het tegenovergestelde van autonoom is heteronoom.
