The automotive industry is the industry involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing, and sale of motor vehicles. In 2006, more than 69 million motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide. In 2006 16 million new automobiles were sold in the USA, 15 million in Western Europe, 7 million in China  and one million in India. In 2007 the markets in Canada, USA, Western Europe and Japan are stagnating, while those in South America (especially Brazil) and Asia (South Korea and India) are growing.

Die Automobilindustrie ist ein Industriezweig, der sich der Herstellung von Automobilen und anderen Kraftfahrzeugen widmet. Die Automobilindustrie entstand nach Erfindung des Automobils 1885 durch den Deutschen Carl Benz gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und erlebte einen bedeutenden Aufschwung durch die Massenproduktion von Kraftfahrzeugen (vor allem durch Henry Ford), der bis heute anhält. In vielen Industrieländern, wie in den USA, Japan, Deutschland und Korea stellt die Automobilindustrie einen der bedeutendsten Industriezweige dar.
