Autism is a brain development disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior, all exhibited before a child is three years old. These characteristics distinguish autism from milder autism spectrum disorders (ASD).Heritability contributes a large fraction of the risk of a child's developing the disorder, although the genetics of autism are complex, and it is generally unclear which genes are responsible. In rare cases, autism is strongly associated with agents that cause birth defects. Other proposed causes, such as the exposure of children to vaccines, are controversial and the vaccine hypotheses are unsupported by convincing scientific evidence. Most recent reviews estimate a prevalence of one to two cases per 1,000 people for autism, and about six per 1,000 for ASD, with ASD averaging a 4.3:1 male-to-female ratio. The number of people known to have autism has increased dramatically since the 1980s, at least partly due to changes in diagnostic practice; the question of whether prevalence has increased is unresolved.

L'autisme infantile a été décrit pour la première fois en 1943 par Léo Kanner qui l'a isolé au sein des psychoses de l'enfant pour en faire une maladie à part entière. Aujourd'hui on décrit plusieurs formes d'autisme, et celui-ci n'est plus considéré comme une maladie mais comme un syndrome , soit un ensemble de signes cliniques qui peuvent relever de plusieurs étiologies et/ou de plusieurs mécanismes pathologiques.

Autismus (v. gr. αὐτός „selbst“), von der Weltgesundheitsorganisation als eine tiefgreifende Entwicklungsstörung klassifiziert, wird von Ärzten, Forschern, Angehörigen und Autisten selbst als eine angeborene, unheilbare Wahrnehmungs- und Informationsverarbeitungsstörung des Gehirns beschrieben, die sich bereits im frühen Kindesalter bemerkbar macht. Andere Forscher und Autisten beschreiben Autismus als angeborenen abweichenden Informationsverarbeitungsmodus, der sich durch Schwächen in sozialer Interaktion und Kommunikation sowie durch stereotype Verhaltensweisen und Stärken bei Wahrnehmung, Aufmerksamkeit, Gedächtnis und Intelligenz zeigt.

Autyzm wczesnodziecięcy, autyzm głęboki, zespół Kannera – skomplikowany zespół upośledzenia rozwoju, w którym istotną rolę odgrywa funkcjonowanie mózgu. Jest to choroba neurologiczna, wśród typowych cech są problemy z komunikacją uczuć i związkami społecznymi. Występują również kłopoty z integracją wrażeń zmysłowych. W typowych przypadkach pojawia się w pierwszych trzech latach życia. Ocenia się, że występuje u około 2 do 6 na 1000 osób, przy czym jest cztery razy częstszy u mężczyzn niż u kobiet.
