Authentication (from Greek αυθεντικός; real or genuine, from authentes; author) is the act of establishing or confirming something (or someone) as authentic, that is, that claims made by or about the thing are true. Authenticating an object may mean confirming its provenance, whereas authenticating a person often consists of verifying their identity. Authentication depends upon one or more authentication factors.

L'authentification est la procédure qui consiste, pour un système informatique, à vérifier l'identité d'une entité (personne, ordinateur...), afin d'autoriser l'accès de cette entité à des ressources (systèmes, réseaux, applications...). L'authentification permet donc de valider l'authenticité de l'entité en question.

Authentifizierung (v. griech. authentikos für „Anführer“) ist der Vorgang der Überprüfung (Verifikation) einer behaupteten Identität, beispielsweise einer Person oder eines Objekts, wie beispielsweise eines Computersystems.Authentisierung hingegen ist der Vorgang des Nachweises der eigenen Identität. Im Englischen wird zwischen den beiden Begriffen nicht unterschieden: Das Wort authentication steht für beide Vorgänge. Dementsprechend werden die beiden Ausdrücke im Deutschen oft (ungenau) synonym verwendet.Weiterhin ist die Authentifizierung von Objekten, Dokumenten oder Daten die Feststellung, dass diese authentisch sind – es sich somit um ein unverändertes, nicht kopiertes Original handelt. Eine überprüfte Identität, also nach der erfolgreichen Authentifizierung, wird Authentizität genannt.

Uwierzytelnianie (niepoprawnie autentykacja) - proces polegający na zweryfikowaniu zadeklarowanej tożsamości osoby, urządzenia lub usługi biorącej udział w wymianie danych.Uwierzytelnienie następuje po identyfikacji czyli zadeklarowaniu swojej tożsamości przez użytkownika (np. przez podanie loginu). Zadeklarowana ale jeszcze niezaufana tożsamość jest potwierdzana w procesie uwierzytelnienia (np. przez podanie hasła).Często spotykane metody uwierzytelniania:Oparte o asymetryczną kryptografię (klucze w SSH, certyfikaty) - serwer dysponuje kluczem publicznym klienta. Za pomocą tego klucza, szyfruje pakiet danych i wysyła klientowi. Jeśli ten potrafi rozszyfrować, to znaczy, że dysponuje kluczem prywatnym, czyli że jest (teoretycznie) tym, za kogo się podaje.Hasła jednorazoweTokeny Oparte o biometryczne cechy człowieka (np. odciski palców, kształt dłoni, wygląd tęczówki oka), które pobierane są przez odpowiedni czytnik i porównywane z bazą danych.
