1366, euspices; v. 1355, auspice «heureux présage»; du lat. auspicium, de avis «oiseau», et spicere «examiner».

remake of Latin auspicium "divination by observing the flight of birds." This word is based on "auspex" (auspec-s), a contraction of avispex "he who foretells the future from flights of birds." This word is a compound composed of avis "bird" + specere "to look at." "Avis" comes from the same root as English "egg" and the Latin word for egg, "ovum," from which we get our words "oval" and "ovary." The Old Persian word for egg was "avya," which picked up an initial and final consonant when Turkiš borrowed it as "havyar;" we then we borrowed it as "caviar."1
