An auction is the process of buying and selling goods by offering them up for bid, taking bids, and then selling the item to the winning bidder. In economic theory, an auction is a method for determining the value of a commodity that has an undetermined or variable price. Auctioning can be traced as far back as 500 B.C. Auctions can be with reserve or minimum, or without minimums, or absolute or no reserve. In reserve auctions, there is a minimum bid or reserve price; if the bidding does not reach the minimum, there is no sale (but the person who puts the item up for auction may still owe a fee to the auctioneer or auction company). In absolute or no reserve auctions, the sale is guaranteed, with only the price left to be determined. In the context of auctions, a bid is an offered price.

Eine Auktion (auch Versteigerung oder Lizitation) ist eine besondere Form der Preisermittlung. Dabei werden von potentiellen Käufern und/oder Verkäufern Gebote abgegeben. Der Auktionsmechanismus bestimmt, welche der abgegebenen Gebote den Zuschlag erhalten, und definiert die Zahlungsströme zwischen den beteiligten Parteien. Hintergrund dieser Preisfindung sind Informationsasymmetrien im Markt. Ein Anbieter kennt häufig nicht die Zahlungsbereitschaft seiner Kunden. Setzt er einen zu hohen Preis fest, so kann er seine Ware nicht verkaufen. Setzt er seinen Preis zu niedrig fest, so schöpft er nicht den möglichen Umsatz aus. Die Bieter hingegen kennen ihre jeweilige Zahlungsbereitschaft. In dieser Situation bietet die Auktion dem Anbieter einen flexiblen Preisfindungsmechanismus, der im Idealfall zum Verkauf zum aktuellen Marktpreis führt und die Zahlungsbereitschaft der Kunden optimal ausschöpft.

Aukcja jest zorganizowaną formą sprzedaży, będącą formą przetargu prowadzonego na żywo. Zazwyczaj aukcje przeprowadza się wtedy, gdy istnieje wielu potencjalnych nabywców na jeden towar.Punktem wyjścia jest zwykle cena minimalna, od której zaczyna się licytacja, czyli zgłaszanie przez potencjalnych nabywców coraz wyższej ceny za oferowany towar. Zakupu dokonuje podmiot, który w ramach licytacji zaproponuje najwyższą cenę. W niektórych formach aukcji zdarza się jednak tzw. licytowanie "w dół". Taka aukcja to tzw. aukcja holenderska. W tej formie aukcji osoba prowadząca licytację proponuje stopniowo coraz niższą cenę za towar, a nabywcą staje się ten, kto pierwszy zaakceptuje proponowaną cenę.
