atrium (anatomy)

In anatomy, the atrium (plural: atria) refers to a chamber or space. As such it may for example be the atrium of the lateral ventricle in the brain or, popularly, the blood collection chamber of a heart. It has a thin-walled structure that allows blood to return to the heart. There is at least one atrium in an animal with a closed circulatory system. In fish, the circulatory system is very simple: a two-chambered heart including one atrium and one ventricle. In other vertebrate groups, the circulatory system is much more complicated. Their circulatory systems are divided into two types: a three-chambered heart, with two atria and one ventricle, or a four-chambered heart, with two atria and two ventricles. The atrium receives blood as it returns to the heart to complete a circulating cycle, whereas the ventricle pumps blood out of the heart to start a new cycle.

Une oreillette est une cavité supérieure du cœur, délimitée par une paroi fine, recevant le sang de la circulation sanguine. Au nombre de deux, elles permettent le passage du sang des veines (cave et pulmonaire) vers les ventricules.

In anatomia, gli atri sono le due cavità superiori del cuore; sono separati da un tramezzo detto setto interatriale.Gli atri sono posti al di sopra dei due ventricoli; ciascun atrio comunica col ventricolo corrispondente per mezzo dell'ostio atrio-ventricolare. I due atri non sono simmetrici per conformazione interna e relazioni con gli altri organi.

De atria of boezems maken deel uit van het hart. Een zoogdierhart bevat twee atria, in het rechteratrium verzamelt zich zuurstofarm/koolstofdioxiderijk bloed vanuit de bovenste- en onderste holle ader, dat wordt doorgepompt tijdens de samentrekking van het atrium naar de rechterkamer vanwaar het bloed via de longslagader in de longen van zuurstof wordt voorzien om daarna via de longader in het linkeratrium te verzamelen. Vanuit het linkeratrium wordt het nu zuurstofrijke/koolstofdioxidearme bloed doorgepompt naar de linkerkamer vanwaar het in de systole door de aorta naar de rest van het lichaam gepompt wordt.
