Nuclear, or atomic warfare, is a
war in which
nuclear weapons are used. This has only happened once - the
atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the
United States of America against the
Empire of Japan near the end of
World War II. Today the term usually refers to confrontations in which opposing sides are both armed with nuclear weapons. Unlike conventional warfare, nuclear warfare is unfathomably more destructive in both range coverage and extent of damage, and has long term severe damaging effects that can last years, even decades, after the initial attack. The accumulatively effect of a wide scale nuclear war could have such devastating and destructive force, that it is often seen as an scenario for potential armageddon of all life on Earth.
