Atmospheric pressure is the force per unit area exerted into a surface by the weight of air above that surface in the atmosphere of Earth (or that of another planet). In most circumstances atmospheric pressure is closely approximated by the hydrostatic pressure caused by the mass of air above the measurement point. Low-pressure areas have less atmospheric mass above their location, whereas high-pressure areas have more atmospheric mass above their location. Likewise, as elevation increases, there is less overlying atmospheric mass, so that pressure decreases with increasing elevation. On average, a column of air one square centimeter in cross-section, measured from sea level to the top of the atmosphere, has a mass of about 1.03 kg and weight of about 10.1 N (2.28 lb_f) (A column one square inch in cross-section would have a mass of about 14.7 lbs and weight of about 65.4 N).

Der Luftdruck an einem beliebigen Ort der Erdatmosphäre ist der hydrostatische Druck der Luft, der an diesem Ort herrscht. Dieser Druck entsteht durch die Gewichtskraft der Luftsäule, die auf der Erdoberfläche oder einem auf ihr befindlichen Körper steht. Der mittlere Luftdruck der Atmosphäre auf Meereshöhe beträgt normgemäß 101325 Pa = 1013,25 hPa  (Hektopascal = Millibar).

Lufttrycket är trycket i den sammansatta gasen som utgörs av atmosfären. Trycket uppstår genom jordens dragningskraft (gravitationskraft) på gasmassan och minskar med höjden över jordytan. Den sammansatta gasen som atmosfären utgörs av har därför en minskande densitet med höjden och blir i dagligt tal "tunnare" ju högre upp man befinner sig. Detta förhållande utnyttjas av den kommersiella flygtrafiken genom att luftmotståndet minskar ju högre upp flygplanet flyger. Samtidigt minskar mängden syre varför man för vanliga jetmotorer funnit att en höjd på cirka 10 000 m utgör den optimala höjden med avseende på luftmotstånd och nödvändigt syreinnehåll för att få tillräckligt dragkraft från motorerna.
