Astroturfing is a term for formal public relations campaigns in politics and advertising that seek to create the impression of being spontaneous, grassroots behaviour. Hence the reference to AstroTurf (artificial grass) is a metaphor to indicate fake grassroots support.The goal of such a campaign is to disguise the agenda of a client as an independent public reaction to some political entity—a politician, political group, product, service or event. Astroturfers attempt to orchestrate the actions of apparently diverse and geographically distributed individuals, by both overt ("outreach," "awareness," etc.) and covert (disinformation) means. Astroturfing may be undertaken by anything from an individual pushing their own personal agenda through to highly organized professional groups with financial backing from large corporations, non-profits, or activist organizations.

L'astroturfing en anglais américain est un néologisme pour les campagnes de relation publiques formelles en politique et publicité qui cherchent à créer l'impression d'un comportement « grassroots » (« qui prend ses racines dans l'herbe » en anglais) spontané, en référence à l'herbe artificielle, utilisée dans les stades, appelée astroturf.

Der Begriff Astroturfing bezeichnet – insbesondere im amerikanischen Sprachraum – Public-Relations- und kommerzielle Werbeprojekte, die darauf abzielen, den Eindruck einer spontanen Graswurzelbewegung vorzutäuschen. Ziel ist dabei, den Anschein einer unabhängigen öffentlichen Meinungsäußerung über Politiker, politische Gruppen, Produkte, Dienstleistungen, Ereignisse usw. zu erwecken, indem das Verhalten vieler verschiedener und geographisch getrennter Einzelpersonen zentral gesteuert wird.

Astroturfing é um termo utilizado para designar ações políticas ou publicitárias que tentam criar a impressão de que são movimentos espontâneos e populares.O termo em inglês vem de Astro Turf (grama sintética) em oposição ao termo grassroots (que são movimentos espontâneos da comunidade).

Astroturfing es un término utilizado en campañas de relaciones públicas en el ámbito de la propaganda electoral y los anuncios comerciales que pretende dar una impresión de espontaneidad, fruto de un comportamiento con base social. El nombre se debe a AstroTurf, una conocida marca estadounidense de césped artificial, y el significado del término inglés grassroots, cuya traducción literal sería «raíces del césped» pero cuyo significado es «de raíz», auténtico o, como hemos traducido más arriba, «con base social». La comparación con el césped artificial indicaría esa falsa base que se arroga el astroturfing.
