Astronaut
An astronaut or cosmonaut is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. While generally reserved for professional space travelers, the terms are sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists.

Raumfahrer
Ein Raumfahrer (auch Weltraumfahrer) ist ein Teilnehmer an einer bemannten Expedition in den Weltraum. Der erste Raumfahrer war im Jahr 1961 Juri Gagarin. Je nach ihrer Herkunft bezeichnet man Raumfahrer auch als Astronauten (USA, Westeuropa), Kosmonauten (Sowjetunion/Russland, Osteuropa) oder Taikonauten (China). Seltenere Namen sind Spationauten (in Frankreich), Angkasawan (in Malaysia) und Vyomanaut oder Wiomanaut (in Indien).

En rymdfarare är en människa som färdas i rymden utanför jordens atmosfär. Rymdfarare är genom bemannade rymdfärdsprogram utbildade till att föra befäl, flyga eller vara besättningsmedlemmar på rymdfarkoster. Orden astronaut och kosmonaut används ofta på svenska under inflytande av engelsk och rysk vokabulär, eftersom Sovjetunionen/Ryssland och USA under mer än fyra decennier var ensamma om att kunna bedriva bemannad rymdfart fram till 2003 då även Kina kunde sända upp en rymdfarare.

Astronauta
Astronauta, kosmonauta lub tajkonauta to osoba odbywająca loty kosmiczne lub przygotowana do odbywania takich lotów.

Kryteria uznania lotów za kosmiczne różnią się na świecie. W USA astronautami nazywane są osoby, które odbyły lot na wysokości 50 mil (ok. 79 km), jednakże Międzynarodowa Federacja Lotnicza (FAI) definiuje loty kosmiczne jako rozpoczynające się od wysokości 100 km nad ziemią. Do 14 października 2004, 437 ludzi podróżowało w przestrzeń kosmiczną (443 według definicji amerykańskiej), z co najmniej 32 krajów.
