Asthma (from the Greek άσθμα, ásthma, "panting") is the common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma is clinically classified according to the frequency of symptoms, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and peak expiratory flow rate. Asthma may also be classified as atopic (extrinsic) or non-atopic (intrinsic).

Das Asthma bronchiale (von griechisch , „Atemnot“, oft auch vereinfachend nur Asthma genannt), ist eine chronische, entzündliche Erkrankung der Atemwege mit dauerhaft bestehender Überempfindlichkeit. Bei entsprechend veranlagten Personen führt die Entzündung zu anfallsweiser Luftnot infolge einer Verengung der Atemwege – einer sogenannten Bronchialobstruktion (Definition des ). Diese Atemwegsverengung wird durch vermehrte Sekretion von Schleim, Verkrampfung der Bronchialmuskulatur und Bildung von Ödemen der Bronchialschleimhaut verursacht, sie ist durch Behandlung rückbildungsfähig (reversibel). Eine Vielzahl von Reizen verursacht die Zunahme der Empfindlichkeit der Atemwege (bronchiale Hyperreaktivität oder auch Hyperreagibilität) und die damit verbundene Entzündung. Fünf Prozent der Erwachsenen und sieben bis zehn Prozent der Kinder leiden an Asthma bronchiale.

L'asthme (phon. : [asm]) est une maladie inflammatoire non-contagieuse qui affecte les bronches. On retrouve dans l'asthme :

• une inflammation de l'épithélium bronchique, avec notamment un gonflement (œdème) ;
• une bronchoconstriction : contraction des muscles lisses bronchiques, ou spasme ;
• une hypersécrétion de mucus.

Tout ceci entraîne une obstruction partielle des bronches, donc une augmentation des résistances des voies aériennes (plus particulièrement des petites voies aériennes) et donc une augmentation du travail respiratoire.

Astma är ett inflammatoriskt syndrom som påverkar luftvägarna. Symtomen beror oftast på en begränsning av luftflödet (luftvägsobstruktion) som är reversibel, antingen spontant eller efter behandlingar. Obstruktionen beror på sammandragning av luftrörens muskler, samt svullnad och ökad bildning av slem i luftrören. Svårighetsgraden varierar från lätt till livshotande tillstånd.
