Asteroids, also called minor planets or planetoids, are a class of astronomical objects. The term asteroid is generally used to indicate a diverse group of small celestial bodies in the solar system that orbit around the Sun. Asteroid (Greek for "star-like") is the most commonly used word in the English literature for minor planets, which has been the term preferred by the International Astronomical Union; some other languages prefer planetoid (Greek: "planet-like"), because it more accurately describes what they are. In late August 2006, the IAU introduced the term "small solar system bodies" (SSSBs), which includes most objects thus far classified as minor planets, as well as comets. At the same time they introduced the term dwarf planet for the largest minor planets. This article deals specifically with the minor planets that orbit in the inner solar system (roughly up to the orbit of Jupiter). Un astéroïde est un objet céleste dont les dimensions varient de quelques dizaines de mètres à plusieurs kilomètres et qui, à la différence d'une comète, tourne autour du Soleil sur une orbite faiblement elliptique (cf. lois de Kepler). Les astéroïdes font partie du système solaire et ne sont pas les satellites d'une planète.

Als Asteroiden bezeichnet man kleine planetenähnliche Objekte, die sich auf keplerschen Umlaufbahnen um die Sonne bewegen.In der Terminologie der Astronomen wird ein Asteroid häufig synonym als Kleinplanet oder Planetoid (planetenähnliches Objekt) bezeichnet, da Asteroid sinngemäß eigentlich für „sternähnliches Objekt“ steht (von , aster „Stern“ und der Endung -eides „ähnlich“), was jedoch nichts mit den tatsächlichen physikalischen Eigenschaften dieser Himmelskörper zu tun hat. Asteroiden sind lediglich so klein, dass sie in den meisten Teleskopen – anders als die großen Planeten – wie Sterne nur punktförmig erscheinen und nicht als Scheibe, daher die Bezeichnung „sternähnlich“.

Planetoida (planeta + gr. eídos postać), asteroida (gr. asteroeidés – gwiaździsty), planetka (ang. minor planet) – ciało niebieskie o małych rozmiarach - od kilku metrów do czasem ponad 1000 km, obiegające gwiazdę centralną (w Układzie Słonecznym - Słońce), posiadające stałą powierzchnię skalną lub lodową, bardzo często – przede wszystkim w przypadku asteroid mniejszych i mało masywnych – o nieregularnym kształcie, często noszącym znamiona kolizji z innymi podobnymi obiektami.

Un asteroide (a volte chiamato pianetino o planetoide) è un oggetto simile per composizione ad un pianeta terrestre ma più piccolo, e generalmente privo di una forma sferica; ha in genere un diametro inferiore al chilometro, anche se non mancano corpi di grandi dimensioni, dacché tecnicamente anche i corpi particolarmente massicci recentemente scoperti nel sistema solare esterno sono da considerarsi asteroidi. Si pensa che gli asteroidi siano residui del disco protoplanetario che non sono stati incorporati nei pianeti, durante la formazione del sistema. La maggior parte degli asteroidi si trovano nella fascia principale, e alcuni hanno degli asteroidi satelliti. Hanno spesso orbita caratterizzate da un'elevata eccentricità. Asteroidi molto piccoli (in genere frammenti derivanti da collisioni), con le dimensioni di un masso o anche meno (secondo l'Unione Astronomica Internazionale, corpi di massa compresa fra 10-9 e 107 kg), sono conosciuti come "meteoroidi". Gli asteroidi composti per la maggior parte di ghiaccio sono conosciuti invece come comete. Alcuni asteroidi sono il residuo di vecchie comete, che hanno perso il loro ghiaccio nel corso di ripetuti avvicinamenti al Sole, e sono adesso composti per lo più di roccia.
