Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. At the turn of the 21st century, the game was played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field of grass or green artificial turf, with a goal in the middle of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal.

Unter dem Begriff Assoziationsfußball (engl. Association football) versteht man das Fußballspiel nach den Regeln der Football Association, dem englischen Fußballverband. Das Regelwerk dazu entstand 1863. Mit „Assoziationsfußball“ ist also das gemeint, was heute im deutschsprachigen Raum unter „Fußball“ verstanden wird.

Fußball ist eine Ballsportart, bei der zwei Mannschaften mit dem Ziel gegeneinander antreten, mehr Tore zu machen als der Gegner und so das Spiel zu gewinnen. Die Spielzeit ist üblicherweise 2 × 45 Minuten, jedoch gibt es auch Variationen, bei der die Spielzeit kürzer oder länger ist. Eine Mannschaft besteht in der Regel aus elf Spielern, wovon ein Spieler der Torwart ist. Der Ball darf mit dem Fuß und anderen Körperteilen gespielt werden mit Ausnahme der Hände und Arme. Nur der Torwart darf den Ball innerhalb des eigenen Strafraums auch mit diesen Körperteilen spielen.

Piłka nożna (ang. football) – gra zespołowa, najpopularniejsza na świecie dyscyplina sportowa. W zawodach (meczach) piłkarskich uczestniczą 2 rywalizujące ze sobą drużyny. Celem gry jest umieszczenie piłki w bramce przeciwnika, zwycięża drużyna, która uczyni to więcej razy. Mecze piłkarskie odbywają się na prostokątnym, pokrytym murawą boisku. Rozmiary boiska to 45 m do 90 m szerokości i długości od 90 m do 120 m. Od 14 marca 2008 roku każde nowe boisko powinno mieć wymiary 105 m - długość, 65 m- szerokość.
