Asceticism describes a life characterized by abstinence from worldly pleasures (austerity). Those who practice ascetic lifestyles often perceive their practices as virtuous and pursue them to achieve greater spirituality. Many ascetics believe the action of purifying the body helps to purify the soul, and thus obtain a greater connection with the Divine or find inner peace. This may take the form of self-mortification, rituals or renunciations of pleasure. However, ascetics maintain that self-imposed constraints bring them greater freedom in various areas of their lives, such as increased clarity of thought and the ability to resist potentially destructive temptations.

Asceza ( askesis - pierwotnie "ćwiczenie, trening") – skrajne wyrzekanie się i ograniczanie przyjemności, wstrzemięźliwość, zazwyczaj z pobudek  religijnych. Oznacza dobrowolne ograniczanie potrzeb cielesnych (jedzenie, sen, współżycie płciowe) do absolutnego minimum i poddawanie się surowej dyscyplinie wewnętrznej w celu osiągnięcia czystości i doskonałości duchowej. Ludzi praktykujących ascetyzm nazywamy ascetami.

Il termine ascetismo denota una vita che è caratterizzata dal rifiutare i piaceri terreni e vivere in austerità. Coloro che praticano stili di vita ascetici spesso percepiscono le loro pratiche come virtù e le ricercano per raggiungere maggiore spiritualità. Molti asceti credono che l'azione di purificare il corpo aiuti a purificare l'anima, e a ottenere perciò un maggiore legame con cio che è divino pace interiore. Ciò può prendere anche la forma di auto-mortificazione rituale o rinunce brutali al piacere. Questi asceti però sono del parere che le costrizioni autoimposte li portino a raggiungere una maggiore libertà in vari campi della loro vita, come una maggiore abilità a pensare chiaramente ed a resistere ad impulsi vari.
