ascendant

The ascendant ( or As), or rising sign, is the zodiacal sign and degree that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the specific time and location of an event. According to astrological theory, celestial phenomena reflect or determine human activity on the principle of 'as above so below'. Thus astrologers believe that the ascendant signifies a person's awakening consciousness, in the same way that the Sun's appearance on the eastern horizon signifies the dawn of a new day. Due to the fact that the ascendant is specific to a particular time and place, it signifies the individual environment and conditioning that a person receives during their upbringing, and also the circumstances of their childhood. For this reason, the ascendant is also concerned with how a person has learned to present him or herself to the world, especially in public and in impersonal situations. In some circumstances, it can therefore function as a shield or mask to guard a person's real nature - in other words the 'defense mechanism' every person has to cope with unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations. The ascendant also has a strong bearing on a person's physical appearance and overall health.

Ascendent to w astrologii punt ekliptyki, który wschodzi w określonym momencie i miejscu na Ziemi. Jego położenie uzależnione jest więc od dokładnego czasu i współrzędnych geograficznych danego zdarzenia (np. narodzenia człowieka). Przeciętnie co około dwie godziny nad wschodnim horyzontem pojawia się nowy znak zodiaku, można przyjąć, że co około dwie godziny zmienia się ascendent. Jest to jednak duże uproszczenie, gdyż nachylenie ekliptyki sprawia, że np. na szerokości geograficznej, na jakiej położona jest Polska najszybciej wschodzi znak Ryb (około godziny) a najwolniej znak Panny (około 3 godzin).

De "Ascendant" is in de astrologie het punt van de dierenriem dat op het moment van een geboorte aan de oostelijke horizon staat. Technisch gezien is de ascendant het snijpunt van horizon en ecliptica. In het spraakgebruik wordt vaak het hele dierenriem teken waarin dit snijpunt valt als ascendant gezien. Er wordt dan ook naar verwezen als "het rijzende teken". In iemands geboortehoroscoop zou het te maken hebben met uiterlijke kenmerken en de manier waarop de persoon zich aan de buitenwereld toont. In een horoscoop(tekening) begint het eerste huis in de ascendant. Het teken tegenovergesteld aan de ascendant is de descendant. In onderstaande horoscoop wordt de ascendant zoals gebruikelijk is met "ASC" aangeduid en valt in het voorbeeld in het teken van Maagd, terwijl de descendant in Vissen valt. Let wel dat de horsocooptekening altijd 'gespiegeld' is omdat het zuiden boven ligt, zodat de oostelijke horizon en de ascendant links te vinden is.
