The word Asbestos is derived from a Greek adjective meaning inextinguishable. It is distinguished from other minerals by the fact that its crystals form long, thin fibers. Deposits of asbestos are found throughout the world. The primary sites of commercial production are: the Commonwealth of Independent States, Canada, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Russia and South Africa.

Asbest (altgriech. ἄσβεστος, asbestos, „unvergänglich”) ist eine Sammelbezeichnung für verschiedene, natürlich vorkommende, faserförmige Silikat-Minerale, die an vielen Stellen der Erde in der Erdkruste eingebettet sind. Die Faser des Magnesioriebeckits oder Krokydoliths aus der Gruppe der Hornblenden (auch Blauasbest genannt) ist bläulich, die Faser des Klinochrysotils (Serpentingruppe) ist weiß oder grün. Weitere zum Asbest zählende Minerale sind Grunerit (Amosit, Brauner Asbest), Anthophyllit und Aktinolith.

Azbest to grupa wielu różnych minerałów, występujących w formie włóknistej. Nazwa azbest nie określa konkretnego minerału lecz dotyczy ogółu minerałów krzemianowych tworzących włókna. Należą do nich:azbesty właściwe: azbesty serpentynowe (chryzotylowe) i amfibolowe (aktynolitowe, amiantowe, antofyllitowe, amozytowe, krokidolitowe – odmiana riebeckitu oraz magnesioriebeckitowe).Do minerałów azbestopodobnych należą: attapulgit, sepiolit, talk włóknisty, wollastonit, serpentynit włóknisty, antygoryt włóknisty oraz zeolity włókniste.
