Arthropods (Phylum Arthropoda, from Greek , "joint", and , "foot") are the largest phylum of animals and include the insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and others. Arthropods are characterised by the possession of a segmented body with appendages on each segment. They have a dorsal heart and a ventral nervous system. All arthropods are covered by a hard exoskeleton made of chitin, a polysaccharide, which provides physical protection and resistance to desiccation. Periodically, an arthropod sheds this covering when it moults.

Les arthropodes (Arthropoda) — ou euarthropodes du grec arthron « articulation » et podos « pied », aussi appelés « articulés » — forment un embranchement d'animaux invertébrés. Die Gliederfüßer ((Eu-)Arthropoda) sind ein Stamm des Tierreichs. Zu ihnen gehören so unterschiedliche Tiere wie Insekten, Tausendfüßer, Krebse, Entenmuscheln, Spinnen, Skorpione, Milben und die ausgestorbenen Trilobiten.Gliederfüßer sind ein sehr erfolgreicher Stamm. Rund 80 Prozent aller bekannten rezenten Tierarten sind Gliederfüßer, die meisten davon Insekten. Sie entstanden vermutlich während der kambrischen Explosion, als zu Beginn des Kambriums vor etwa 540 Millionen Jahren die mehrzelligen Tierstämme plötzlich in der Fossilüberlieferung auftraten. Im 530 Millionen Jahre alten Burgess-Schiefer sind alle drei bis heute existierenden Unterstämme der Gliederfüßer, die Trilobiten und andere heute nicht mehr existente Gruppen bereits vertreten.

Gli Artropodi (Arthropoda, Latreille 1829) sono un phylum di invertebrati protostomi celomati che comprende circa i 5/6 delle specie animali finora classificate (2005). Mostra una notevolissima affinità anatomica con gli Anellidi.Il fatto che abbia generato oltre un milione di specie dimostra come la sua struttura di base sia versatile e adattabile a diversi modi di vita.
