Art history is the academic study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts, i.e. genre, design, format, and look. Moreover, art history generally is the research of artists and their cultural and social contributions.As a term, Art history (also history of art) encompasses several methods of studying the visual arts; in common usage referring to the study of works of art and architecture. The definition is, however, wide-ranging, with aspects of the discipline overlapping upon art criticism and art theory. Ernst Gombrich observed that "the field of art history [is] much like Caesar's Gaul, divided in three parts inhabited by three different, though not necessarily hostile tribes: (i) the connoisseurs, (ii) the critics, and (iii) the academic art historians". Works of art criticism and of art theory frequently have been the pivots upon which the understanding of art history has turned.

Die Kunstgeschichte oder Kunstwissenschaft ist die Wissenschaft von der historischen Entwicklung der bildenden Künste und ihrer ikonographischen, ikonologischen wie auch materiellen Bestimmung. Historia sztuki jest nauką humanistyczną, której przedmiotem są dzieła sztuki oraz piśmiennictwo o sztuce. Klasyczna historia sztuki ogranicza się do zagadnień malarstwa, rzeźby i architektury Europy od paleolitu do współczesności oraz obu Ameryk po 1494 r.Pierwsza katedra historii sztuki powstała w 1813 na uniwersytecie w Getyndze, ale początki piśmiennictwa zajmującego się sztuką sięgają starożytności (Historia naturalna Pliniusza Starszego). Bardzo ważna dla historii sztuki książka powstała w okresie renesansu. Są to Żywoty najsłynniejszych architektów, malarzy i rzeźbiarzy włoskich, od czasów Cimabuego do naszych czasów florenckiego malarza Giorgia Vasariego, wydane po raz pierwszy w 1550 r. we Florencji. Następną przełomową postacią był Johann Joachim Winckelmann, którego historia sztuki starożytnej (Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums, 1764 r.; wyd. polskie ze zmianami Stanisława Kostki Potockiego O sztuce u dawnych, czyli Winkelman polski 1815 r.) na długi czas wpłynęła na widzenie sztuki greckiej i rzymskiej, a także sztuki w ogóle.

La storia dell'arte è una disciplina che studia l'evoluzione delle espressioni artistiche, la costituzione e le variazioni delle forme, degli stili, dei concetti trasmessi attraverso le opere d'arte; uno studio accessorio, ma che comunque pare stabilmente affiancarsi all'indirizzo essenziale, riguarda gli autori delle opere, anche nelle forme di raggruppamento (volontario, autocostituito oppure riconosciuto ex post) come ad esempio i movimenti artistici.
