Arrière-ban
Arrière-ban, in French customs, is a general proclamation whereby the king summons to war all his vassals and their vassals. To the Provost of Paris belongs the convoking and commanding of the arrière-ban.In the Medieval usage, arrière-ban denoted a general levy, where all able-bodied males were summoned into arms.

Arrière-ban
Per arrière-ban si intende la chiamata generale alle armi in Francia nel Medioevo. Il termine è la francesizzazione della parola franca aribanno (ovvero la chiamata - banno - di tutti gli uomini liberi - ari).La Francia, fino a metà del '400 non fu dotata di un esercito permanente e, in guerra, dovette far ricorso ai feudatari. La prassi normale prevedeva che i cavalieri feudali operassero solo nelle terre prossime ai propri feudi e che, perciò, in caso di guerra, si potesse riunire solo un piccolo esercito composto esclusivamente dai vassalli delle terre vicine al fronte. Con l'arrière-ban, invece, tutte le componenti del regno (feudi e città) erano tenute a fornire un certo numero di soldati ed una certa quantità di denaro per dotare il sovrano dei mezzi necessari per affrontare lo sforzo bellico.

[f., fr. oe. arban, heriban, fr. ohg. hariban, heriban, g. heerbann, the calling together of an army; ohg. heri an army + ban a public call or order. the french have misunderstood their old word, and have changed it into arrière-ban, though arrière has no connection with its proper meaning. see ban, abandon.] a proclamation, as of the french kings, calling not only their immediate feudatories, but the vassals of these feudatories, to take the field for war; also, the body of vassals called or liable to be called to arms, as in ancient france.
