An arrest is the act of depriving a person of his or her liberty usually in relation to the purported investigation or prevention of crime and presenting (the arrestee) to a procedure as part of the criminal justice system. The term is Anglo-Norman in origin and is related to the French word arrêt, meaning "stop".

Eine Festnahme ist das Festhalten von Personen (Personengewahrsam) auf rechtlicher Grundlage, wie zivil- oder strafprozessrechtlicher Bestimmungen. In Deutschland ist nur die vorläufige Festnahme vorgesehen.

Arrestering är ett straffprocessuellt frihetsberövande. Uttrycket används inte i svensk lag annat än i den svenska översättningen av artikel 5 i Europakonventionen i "lagen (1994:1219) om den europeiska konventionen angående skydd för de mänskliga rättigheterna och de grundläggande friheterna", som gäller som lag i Sverige).

Areszt - wspólna nazwa instytucji znanych różnym gałęziom prawa, których cechę wspólną stanowi przymusowe odizolowanie poddanej mu osoby od świata zewnętrznego. Różne natomiast są cele, którym instytucje te służą. W prawie cywilnym areszt to jeden ze środków stosowanych w toku egzekucji, służący zmuszeniu dłużnika do zachowania zgodnego z nałożonym na niego obowiązkiem. Areszt stosuje wyłącznie sąd. Stosowanie aresztu regulują przepisy art. 1056-1059 Kodeksu postępowania cywilnego.
