An aria (Italian for air; plural: arie or arias in common usage) in music was originally any expressive melody, usually, but not always, performed by a singer. The term is now used almost exclusively to describe a self-contained piece for one voice usually with orchestral accompaniment. Perhaps the most common context for arias is opera, although there are many arias that form movements of oratorios and cantatas. Composers also wrote 'concert arias', which are not part of any larger work, such as "Ah Perfido" by Beethoven, and a number of concert arias by Mozart.

Une aria (air en italien, pluriel arie ou arias) désignait à l'origine, toute mélodie expressive, souvent (mais pas toujours) chantée. On utilise maintenant ce terme presque uniquement pour décrire un genre musical pour une voix, souvent avec l'accompagnement d'un orchestre. Le contexte le plus répandu pour une aria est probablement l'opéra. De nombreuses arias forment également des mouvements d'oratorios ou de cantates. Certains compositeurs ont également écrit des « arias de concert », ne faisant pas partie d'œuvres plus vastes, comme Ah Perfido de Beethoven, ou encore, un certain nombre d'arias de concert de Mozart.

Unter einer Arie (von italienisch aria „Weise, Luft“, dies zu lateinisch aera von aer „Luft“) versteht man ein solistisch vorgetragenes Gesangsstück, das von Instrumenten, im Regelfall einem Orchester, begleitet wird. Meistens ist eine Arie Teil eines größeren Werkes wie einer Oper, einer Kantate oder eines Oratoriums. Die Arie vermittelt in einer lyrisch-empfindsamen Singweise die Gefühle und Stimmungen, den Affekt – im Gegensatz zum dramatisch orientierten Rezitativ, das die Handlung vorantreibt.

Aria – forma muzyczna wokalno-instrumentalna z kantylenowo rozwiniętym głosem solowym, zwykle część większej formy muzycznej takiej jak oratorium lub opera, występująca w punkcie kulminacyjnym akcji dramatycznej. Na ogół przyjmuje formę pieśni trzyczęściowej.Występuje również jako forma wyłącznie instrumentalna, np. jako część suity barokowej o charakterze nietanecznym.Samodzielną formą arii jest aria koncertowa – utwór muzyczny na głos i orkiestrę, zwykle w formie sonaty.

ARIA (アリア) è un manga di Kozue Amano edito in Giappone dalla casa editrice Mag Garden e in Italia dalla Star Comics. La serie è nata sotto il titolo AQUA pubblicata da Enix, per poi cambiare nome al cambio di editore. AQUA funge da antefatto ad ARIA ed è raccolto in due volumi. Il dodicesimo e ultimo volume di ARIA è uscito il 10 marzo 2008 .Dal manga è stato tratto un anime (inedito in Italia) diviso in più parti: ARIA The ANIMATION (13 episodi), ARIA The NATURAL (26 episodi) e ARIA The ORIGINATION (in corso). Esiste inoltre un OAV dal titolo ARIA The OVA ~Arietta~ pubblicato prima dell'inizio della terza serie.

In campo musicale per aria si intende un brano, quasi sempre per voce solista, articolato in strofe o sezioni. Nella storia dell'opera essa si contrappone al recitativo e rappresenta, sin dalle origini, un momento in cui la forma musicale, con le sue simmetrie e regole interne, prende il sopravvento sull'azione e sul dialogo. Di conseguenza, essa coincide normalmente con un momento drammaturgicamente statico, se non addirittura - specie nel primo Ottocento italiano - con un momento di sospensione del tempo durante il quale lo spettatore ha accesso all'intimo sentimento del personaggio. Altrettanto statico è l'impianto tonale. Non mancano tuttavia, specie nel genere buffo, le cosiddette arie d'azione.
