An archipelago ( ), sometimes called an island group, is a chain or cluster of islands. The word archipelago is derived from the Greek ἄρχι- – arkhi- ("chief") and πέλαγος – pélagos ("sea") through the Italian arcipelago. In Italian, possibly following a tradition of antiquity, the Arcipelago (from medieval Greek *ἀρχιπέλαγος) was the proper name for the Aegean Sea and, later, usage shifted to refer to the Aegean Islands (since the sea is remarkable for its large number of islands). It is now used to refer to any island group or, sometimes, to a sea containing a large number of scattered islands such as the Aegean Sea.

Ein Archipel (m.), [], (aus dem griechischen Αρχιπέλαγος (dominiertes Gewässer); lat. Archipelagus; erst später in der italienischen Form Arc(h)ipelago gebraucht) bezeichnet eine inselreiche Meergegend. Der Begriff gilt heute vielfach als Synonym für „Inselgruppe“, also eine Ansammlung von relativ nahe gelegenen Inseln.

Un archipel est un ensemble d'îles relativement proches les unes des autres.

En ögrupp är ett antal öar som ligger nära varandra. Om antalet öar är betydande kan termen arkipelag användas. En skärgård är en kustnära arkipelag som domineras av smärre öar.

Archipelag (z Archipelagos - nazwa prowincji bizantyjskiej obejmującej główne wyspy Morza Egejskiego) - grupa wysp położonych blisko siebie, najczęściej o wspólnej genezie i podobnej budowie geologicznej. Ze względu na ułożenie wysp można wyróżnić roje wysp - archipelagi składające się z bezładnie rozmieszczonych niedużych wysp oraz łańcuchy wysp, w których wyspy rozmieszczone są rzędem obok siebie.
