Aquatic plants — also called hydrophytic plants or hydrophytes — are plants that have adapted to living in or on aquatic environments. Because living on or under the  water surface requires numerous special adaptations, aquatic plants can only grow in water or permanently saturated soil. Aquatic vascular plants can be ferns or angiosperms (from both monocot and dicot families). Seaweeds are not vascular plants but multicellular marine algae, and therefore not typically included in the category, "aquatic plants." As opposed to plants types such as mesophytes and xerophytes, hydrophytes do not have a problem in retaining water due to the abundance of water in its environment. This means the plant has less need to regulate transpiration (indeed, the regulation of transpiration would require more energy than the possible benefits incurred.)

Les plantes aquatiques (également appelées plantes hydrophytiques ou hydrophytes, ou plantes hygrophiles ou hygrophytes) sont des plantes adaptées à la vie dans des milieux très humides ou aquatiques. Ces plantes se trouvent aussi bien parmi les algues que parmi les végétaux vasculaires, bryophytes, ptéridophytes et angiospermes (familles des monocotylédones et des dicotylédones). Leur adaptation au milieu aquatique est variable. On rencontre dans ces différents groupes des plantes totalement immergées, d'autres, les plus nombreuses, partiellement émergées ou à feuilles flottantes. Elles sont généralement fixées dans la vase qui forme le fond de l'étendue d'eau dans laquelle elle vivent, quelques unes sont libres, cas exceptionnel dans le monde végétal, dérivant entre deux eaux ou flottant en surface. Ces espèces présentent généralement des adaptations au mode de vie aquatique tant dans l'appareil végétatif que dans l'appareil reproducteur.

Unter Wasserpflanzen (Hydrophyten, aus griech.: hydro - Wasser und phyton - Pflanze) versteht man Arten von Gefäßpflanzen, die sich an das Leben im Wasser angepasst haben, die also im Gegensatz zu den Algen, stammesgeschichtlich gesehen, ins Wasser zurückgekehrt sind. Wasserpflanzen leben dauernd oder doch meistens im Wasser, und zwar entweder völlig oder größtenteils untergetaucht (submers), oder sie schwimmen während der Vegetationsperiode ganz oder mit ihren Blättern an der Wasseroberfläche und blühen und fruchten dort. Davon zu unterscheiden sind Sumpfpflanzen, bei denen nur die Wurzeln ständig im Wasser stehen und die einen großen Teil ihrer Blätter oder assimilierenden Sprosse über die Wasseroberfläche erheben.

Hydrofity, rośliny wodne, rośliny wodnopączkowe - rośliny wodne (oprócz planktonu), których pączki odnawiające zimują w wodzie. Wg klasyfikacji Raunkiæra są jedną z grup kryptofitów, czyli roślin skrytopączkowych. W strefach klimatycznych, w których występują okresy niesprzyjające wegetacji roślin (np. zima), zimują pączki znajdujące się w wodzie. Na wiosnę odtwarza się z nich nowy pęd.

Le piante acquatiche, chiamate anche idrofite, sono piante il cui fabbisogno idrico è massimo e che si sono adattate a vivere sommerse o galleggianti nell'acqua. Con il termine piante acquatiche si indicano abitualmente piante vascolari, sia angiosperme sia felci. Le alghe, organismi privi di veri e propri tessuti di conduzione, non vengono per convenzione considerate in questa categoria.
